The Basics of Learning

We may spend many unavailable hours in training. The result is a longer list of 'do not do' that when violated is deemed a mistake. We all want to be the expert and we'll save face at all costs. All throughout training we wonder when we'll be enough of an expert to get authority and to do a good job.

At best, we cope with learning. We want to know the right way, we want the agenda to follow. We want the recipe for success. We follow the 'do not do' lists wholeheartedly. We want the experience to get the results. Show me what to do to be successful and I'll do it.

That is the hard way.

The easier way to learn is to do it actively. Practice it and make it a habit. Do it with others. Here are some rock solid things you should do to get started:

1. Tell everyone that you are a beginner at something.
2. Get a partner to learn something with.
3. Create a group dedicated to increasing performance. Meet regularly discussing what you are good at, what you've learned, what needs more attention, and what surprised you.

If you still don't know what to do, get up right now and run down the hall screaming "I am incompetent." See, told you - everyone likes to be an expert. Now, how do you think this affects learning?
