Dear Mr. Macomber,

what an eye-opener! What a fantastic way to make decisions! Actualy I regret to not read the book earlier, when CBA was first mentioned in the Lean Construction Papers and in lectures. I just read through the book Choosing By Advantages Decision Making System because it was available right away (unfortunately not in my language) and am enthusiastic to practice it wherever I can. But as written in the book feedback is a good help when learning how to use the CBA System. Are there Groups or Social Networks where I might find CBA learners to connect with? How can I find people that are as enthusiastic as I am about CBA?

So far thank you very much for bringing the topic back into my mind with your blog post.

Something about myself: I studied Lean Construction Concepts at the Institut of Mr. Gehbauer at Karlsruhe University in Germany and deepend my knowlede since then. I graduated in 2010 with a work on Lean Culture in Construction Companies. Right now I am preparing a pilot project on the Last Planner(R) System, Visualisation and 5S for a company I am working at.

Great points, Hal. It's funny, I left that last sentence in my original post planning to do a follow-up. But prolific as you are, you beat me to it. In addition to your three reasons that people get stuck on one answer, I think there is a special circumstance for leaders. Most leaders regard their job description to include making decisions, particularly tough ones. You know, the last word. when others can't agree. And once the decision is made, leaders must "stay the course" and not deviate. How can we follow a leader who keeps changing direction? But over time, constant challenges to a leader's authority and decisions can breed a closed-mind habit. Leaders make a fetish of sticking to their guns and the result is many missed opportunities for better solutions and a more participatory culture.

All of us needs a guidance. Even though we are too old for it, we should know when is the right time to consult an expert for some of a point. Learn to accept the fact that all of us don't know everything in life.

I am a Core team member of LCI NCR chapter. Several companies in the National Capital region and looking for resources to offer training to their employees in Lean principles and Lean project delivery approach. Does LPC have an associate in the Mid-Atlantic region?
