Klaus is the Managing Principal of LeanProject. His expertise spans all aspects of project design and construction, with a career-long focus on continuous improvement and lean construction.
A Civil Engineering graduate from the University of Illinois, and a former PE in that state, Klaus started his career as a structural designer for an international engineering and construction firm headquartered in Chicago. He eventually shifted to the construction management side of the business and led numerous oil refinery projects in the US. His early experience with Total Quality Management and continuous improvement form the basis of his personal philosophy on organizational management.
Klaus recalls working for various global energy clients as an eye opening experience. “I was struck by the contrast between companies who thought they were using ‘best-in-industry’ practices and their truly lean competitors who zoomed past them in a blur – a lesson in perspective and paradigm that I will never forget.”
Switching to the General Contracting business, Klaus was instrumental in establishing and growing the operations of several companies in and around Milwaukee. He completed projects ranging from transportation and infrastructure to healthcare and residential high-rise. While earning his MBA at Marquette University, he was introduced to lean manufacturing and quickly began exploring how these concepts could benefit the construction industry. Becoming active in the Lean Construction Institute, Klaus was a student and practitioner of lean in his own company’s operations.
Klaus’s experience with both project-specific and enterprise-wide improvement efforts serves as a valuable resource to LeanProject’s clients. Whether working with individuals, project teams, or senior leadership, Klaus recognizes that fostering a healthy learning environment is essential for creating real and sustainable change.
